PEKING: THE OLYMPIC STADIUM PROJECT IS SIGNED HERZOG & DE MEURON

The Chinese call it the "bird's nest": taking inspiration from a woven nest, where in fact the structural elements are interwoven to form a mesh integrated into which are the facades, stairwells and roofs, with light and insulating material infill in the open sections.
The structure - which must be ready for the Peking Olympics in 2008 - has a large openable roof forming a transparent shell and reflecting light beams externally.

ENVIRONMENT CODE: ITALIAN GOVERNMENT GO AHEAD AND CIAMPI SIGNATURE

The amalgamated environment law - approved by the Council of Ministers - was signed by President of the Republic Ciampi after a few modifications.
The objections concerned the lack of State Council opinion and the negative opinion of the State-Regional Conference, shared by environmental associations and put forward when bureaucratic stages had already concluded.
Among the most significant modifications made by Ciampi is the Government about-face on abrogation of the regulation (art. 17, para 46, Italian Law 127/1997) allowing environmental associations to take legal action in defence of the environment.

IN SPAIN SOLAR ENERGY BECOMES MANDATORY - NEW TECHNICAL BUILDING CODE APPROVED: ECOENERGY ALSO FOR DOMESTIC USE

Spain is placed amongst the most advanced countries in the world on the subject of solar energy with the recent introduction of mandatory use to produce 30-70% of domestic hot water, both for new buildings and any to be upgraded.
Large buildings in the services sector also, e.g. a 4000 sq.m. plant, will be obliged to install photovoltaic systems.
The repercussions of the new Technical Building Code will probably make themselves felt on the market from the end of next year.
Until now, Spain has not made mass investments in solar energy production. Data published by Eurostat, Statistical Office of the EU, indicate that in 2003 solar energy production in Spain was 48 thousand TOE (metric tons of oil equivalent), whilst Germany boasted production of 241 thousand TOE, Greece 105 thousand TOE and Austria 80 thousand. Italy produced a mere 11 thousand TOE.

MOSCOW: PROJECT SUBMITTED FOR THE FOSTER TOWER
118 FLOORS AND A TOTAL HEIGHT OF 600 METRES

By 2010 the Moscow skyline will be changed by the skyscraper destined to become the tallest in Europe: a tower of 118 floors, and height of 600 meters, offering space for up to 25 thousand persons, for which the project is signed by the Foster & Partners studio.
The tower will have an "energy cycle" which will inaugurate sustainable architecture in Moscow, strengthening the city from both an economic and social point of view, via a natural ventilation system and maximum energy-saving technologies. It will also include a snow and rainwater recycling system allowing 30% reutilisation.
The streamlined and elegant tower profile derives from the gradual tapering of the structure upwards towards the skyline, and wind resistance is made possible by wind-bracing structural elements which, from the bottom up, reconnect diagonally along the central backbone to form a lattice; a mesh that sustains the weight of the building and at the same time offers the structure a particular geometric facade.
A panoramic public area is planned at the top, equipped with a bar and cafeteria, destined to become an attraction for both tourists and locals.
