CARBON FIBERS SUPPORT BRIDGES

The third phase of reinforcement of the Hammersmith Road Bridge, a 150-year-old London bridge characterized by intense traffic and also crossed by two railway lines and an Underground line, has started.
Traffic was reduced some time ago and restricted to heavy vehicles, an unsustainable situation that has made it necessary to identify a solution insofar as reconstruction or installation of steel supporting structures is out of the question due to problems of time, weight and costs.
Therefore, it has been decided to use CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer), chosen for its sturdiness, light weight and consequent ease of application, without using any additional structures.

DUPONT FLUOROCHEMICALS DEVELOPS NEW GENERATION COOLANTS

DuPont Fluorochemicals has developed and is currently testing coolants that comply with EU requirements regarding the need to reduce global warming.
At the moment, automotive coolants are being tested but the new compounds also feature even more sustainable properties for other refrigeration and climate control applications on which Dupont has based its research.
The new coolants - non-flammable and non-toxic - will be on the market in three-five years time in order to meet the deadlines set by the EU's F-Gas Regulation Proposal which envisages elimination of all HFC-134a hydrofluorcarbons in all new vehicle models starting from 2011 and in all new cars by 2017 and replacement with alternative solutions with a GWP of less than 150.
