BERGAMO: THE URBAN CENTRE BEARS THE SIGNATURE OF STUDIO GAMBIRASIO
The Urban Center in Bergamo, due to be inaugurated in 2009 and said to be "where transparency begins", was designed as a place in which the city can 'talk to' its citizens and visitors.
The project comprises a rectangular glass and steel structure decorated with pre-painted corrugated plate and porphyry cubes, covering a 363 sq.m. surface area. |
 |
 |
The roof covers an area of 829 sq.m., extending beyond the perimeter of the building to create extensive covered areas (over 500 sq.m.) planned as meeting places.
On the first floor a tunnelled overhead walkway will link the Urban Center to the rail station.
Particular attention has been dedicated to the systems with a view to optimum energy saving: heating and air-conditioning will be provided by floor and ceiling fitted radiator panels and pre-treated outside air distribution circuits.

NEW YORK: FUTURISTIC REFUGE FROM CITY LIFE
The home designed to escape from city life has a futuristic architecture: known as VilLA NM, the one-family home design by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio.
It is not a traditional home, nor is it designed for permanent residence: it is a summer home, or for weekends, a place in which the day can be enjoyed in complete tranquillity.
Built on the top of a hill in the northern area of New York State: the side walls are full-height windows allowing entry of natural light. The building exterior is in different hues to reflect the colours of the surrounding nature: the walls are earth-coloured, whilst the tone chosen for the windows is similar to a twilight sky.

PORTUGAL AWAITING 600 MILLION FROM THE EU FOR LARGE-SCALE WORKS
The Portuguese government hopes to obtain EU funding of 600 million euro to sustain large-scale infrastructure investments, such as the new Ota airport and TGV rail network.
These projects, classified as top priority by the European Commission, should receive funds as part of the Transeuropean Networks global Community programme, with an overall budget of eight billion euro to be distributed among the 30 priority projects submitted by all member countries.
To obtain the 600 million euro, Portugal is required to make 7.5% of the total available between 2007 and 2013, and therefore become one of the key beneficiaries of this programme which also finances the large-scale projects in the major European countries.

LONDON: FIRST 'ZERO EMISSIONS' DISTRICT LAUNCHED
The 'One Gallions' consortium is the partner chosen to head the zero-emissions building works in Gallions Park, the project for which was put together by British studio, Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects.
The works aim to guarantee a sustainable lifestyle to residents, according to the principles of "One Planet Living": a significant reduction in carbon emissions and environmental impact, natural materials, integrated waste treatment management, onsite food farming, environment-friendly transport.
The objective is the construction of 200 zero-emission residential homes, built to the highest possible environmental standards and exploiting renewable energy sources, and to promote the "Gallions Park" project as the standard development model in London and throughout the UK.
Carbon emissions from buildings are considered to be the major cause of climate change, for which reason Greenpeace is also in support of this initiative.

BILBAO: FOUNDATION STONE LAID FOR THE PELLI TOWER - IBERDROLA COMPANY HQ
The new architectural symbol of Bilbao will be ready in 2011.
It will become the HQ of Spanish power company Iberdrola, the project bearing the signature of architect César Pelli.
The tower will be built in the Abandoibarra area - subject to an ambitious restructuring project - and seen from afar will become a familiar landmark for orientation in the city of Bilbao.
The tower's 37 floors will reach a total height of 165 metres: the first five floors will be a hotel, the last eight will house the Iberdrola offices, and the remainder will be used as other offices.
Pelli defines the project as a "glass obelisk": in fact, the building layout is a slightly rounded triangle, tapering as it climbs towards the skyline, much the same as an obelisk.
It is also planned to build 143 luxury residential units adjacent to the tower.

THE NEW PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE IN LEICESTER
Under construction now is the new Performing Arts Centre in Leicester, a theatre and scenic arts centre designed by New York architect, Rafael Viñoly.
The building will be officially opened to the public at the start of 2008 as an "inside out" theatre: production, construction, know-how and technique become visible to the public and an integral part of the urban experience.
The stage, in fact, is set in the centre of the building at road level, and passers-by can therefore see the scenography and behind-the-scenes movement from the outside.
In Viñoly's project, the net distinction between front and rear facades of the building do not exist, as the stage itself is an integral part of the foyer and circulation areas.
The aim of eliminating the confines between facade and rear of the building is achieved via a mesh encompassing the entire structure, confusing the boundaries between performance area and public area: the stage, workshops, seating and entrance areas will be separated by a series of partition walls and sliding curtains to meet the various functional and acoustic requirements.

AIPE: SEMINARS FOR ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS
AIPE - Italian Polystyrene Foam Association - has relaunched its training and updating programme for low environment-impact building design for construction designers and operators.
The next seminars, "Zero energy buildings" will be held in Palermo on 24 May and Bolzano on 21 June, and are targeted to engineers, builders, architects and surveyors who will be given technical information on construction criteria awareness in relation to energy saving and environmental respect, objectives that are achievable also by careful design involving the use of efficient heat insulation systems.
The seminars will cover several topics, of a physical nature (considerations in relation to energy saving) and of a more technical nature, such as heating and cooling systems using radiator panels and insulation techniques.
Energy savings achieved via controlled mechanical ventilation systems will also be discussed, along with the various heat insulation techniques for civil and industrial buildings.

SINGAPORE: 150-METRE RESIDENTIAL TOWER BLOCK OPTIMIZES SPACE
 |
 |
Four towers of staggered heights will appear on the skyline as elevators, stopped on different levels, interconnecting with one central nucleus: this is the first project of the OMA studio (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) for a residential tower 153 metres high, with 36 floors covering a total 20,000 sq.m. surface area.
The four blocks, vertically staggered, reduce ground usage in the area to a minimum.
Space on the ground floor is therefore free, and according to the project design are destined for recreational use. |

BURJ DUBAI: THE TALLEST TOWER IN THE WORLD
The tallest tower in the world will be built in Dubai in 2008 and will be visible from a 90 km distance.
It will reach 800 metres in height, composed of 3 units - set around a wide central column - ending in a spiral: 160 floors, 500,000 sq.m. and an estimated 850 million dollars to complete the project, designed by architectural studio SOM - Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP.
The design concentrates on problems relating to the formation of air vortices. The very wide base of the tower, in fact, will not allow the formation of air currents that often rise from the ground to affect the higher levels of this kind of building.
It will house offices, shopping centres, 5-star hotels and luxury apartments, becoming an architectural symbol and another world tourism destination.
