EXPO 2015: RHO-PERO GIVES MILAN TRADE FAIRS AN ADDED ADVANTAGE

Expo 2015 will see Milan in the role of city-region, the heart of a system also included Genoa and Turin: this is the idea of the Milan Chamber of Commerce.
The Expo 2015 event will be held in the Rho-Pero exhibition centre, offering a series of social facilities - such as the new interactive science and technical museum and kids' town - executive buildings and research centres for multimedia communications and ITC, all integrated with the new Milan Trade Fair Centre - a 'Made in Italy' village - a new Metropolitan light railway connecting the exhibition grounds with San Raffaele Hospital.
With this new trade fair centre, Milan is moving further west, into the Milan-Turin-Genoa macro-region, thus allowing Italian trade fairs an extra opportunity in terms of strategic position.
This challenge calls for new buildings to house museums, executive offices and research centres, also with a view to increased tourism, costing almost 7 billion euro.

The design for the Mediterranean museum of nuraghic and contemporary art, due to be constructed on the Sant'Elia waterfront in Cagliari, is by Anglo-Iraqi architect, Zaha Hadid.
Inspired by coral formations, imitating their cavities and porous surfaces, and reproducing marine erosion, it will involve buildings and spaces visible from various observation points, forming two continuous facings.
Zaha Hadid's design represents a new perception of the Cagliari landscape, a way of interpreting the link between the historic and future identities of Sardinia.

A NEW ENVIRONMENT SUSTAINABLE STADIUM

The Stadium Plus project for the new "Friuli" stadium in Udine, Italy - multi-function and environment-sustainable - is a new way of watching and experiencing football: state-of-the-art in terms of both construction method (reduced times and cost, with installation customization options) and the "English-style" approach to the concept of a stadium, with crowd and players almost in contact.
The design is not only as a simple meeting place active just one day a week, but as a construction to be exploited to its full potential, with sports halls, fitness centres, health and rehabilitation centres, shopping centres and concert areas, enhancing the surrounding area yet at the same time of low environmental impact.
Constructed in or close to a city park, it will be almost totally independent from an energy and environment sustainability point of view, with the dual objective of providing a more comfortable and usable stadium while keeping costs low.
The project has aroused considerable interest in Coni, Federcalcio and in other countries including China, Russia and South Africa.

THIRD BRIDGE ON THE BOSPHORUS

2007 will see the invitation to tender for the construction of the third bridge on the Bosphorus.
Turkish Public Works Minister, Nafiz Ozak, made the announcement, putting an end to the controversy which arose over the fact that Istanbul has only one underwater tunnel to cope with the intense traffic of a city with 15 million inhabitants.
The chaotic traffic situation leads to an annual loss of 1.5 billion dollars, every road user forced to waste around 45 minutes a day on the two existing bridges.

AN "URBAN CACTUS" ON THE QUAY IN ROTTERDAM PORT

An original residential complex designed by Dutch studio Ucx Architects, led by Ben Huygen and Jasper Jaegers, is due to be built in Rotterdam: the Urban Cactus, defined as such for its similarity to the plant.
It will contain 98 residential units on 19 floors, and the irregular shape of the construction will include buildings of various surface areas from 65 to 110 square metres.
Each floor will have an overhanging terrace with alternating ponds and hanging gardens, further characterising the association with a cactus shape.

The glass - used for most of the construction - will allow a 360° view of the landscape and from outside it will be possible to glimpse the greenery of all the plants to be included in this futuristic configuration.

ARTIFICIAL ISLANDS IN RICCIONE

The impact of tourism and erosion of the coast render Riccione an interesting development prospect, as proposed in the designs submitted to "Sealine Riccione", an international workshop promoted by the architecture faculties of Ferrara, Syracuse (NY, USA) and Delft (NL) universities.
The common project consists in an island, or rather an archipelago of small artificial islands, produced in natural materials, as in Surfer Paradise in Norrowneck, La Grande Motte in Monaco, Java in Amsterdam, Island of the Day After off Tel Aviv and the Genoa Waterfront.
Constructed from sea sand and other natural materials, they will form a tidal barrier and a new city development area for use as a semi-floating harbour, nature reserve, an area dedicated to industry and fashion, even a peace centre for theology students.
The proposals can be considered the start of a rethinking process for a balanced development of Italy's coastal towns and cities.
